Literature Review
The goal of this literature review is to better understand the realms of images and words, both separately and where they intersect. In doing so, I hope to improve the quality standards of Vidtionary’s video definitions in terms of pedagogy and visual communication. The concept of Vidtionary was born from practice, my own experiences and experiments as educator and student, and as such does not owe its origin to any single theory. There is no law that prohibits me from proceeding without considering visual and linguistic theories, but I do think the project will take on more depth by studying the extensive literature available. Much has been written by visual practitioners that would help develop my own techniques for creating videos. I am also aware that visuals possess a primordial power that needs to be handled with care, particularly in an educational setting. I am aware that the task of creating a video dictionary could be the task of a lifetime or more, while the relevant literature could fill a library.
